bollywood incurs heavy loss

by admin on April 24, 2010

Bollywood has incurred heavy losses in 2010.

Despite the fact that both 3 Idiots, released on December 25 last year and My Name Is Khan released in Valentine week this year have gone on to become big hits, 2010 hasn’t been the best year for Bollywood with the Hindi film industry losing over Rs. 200 cr in the first 3 months.

Analysts say that much of these losses have been due to very poor content, which the Bollywood fans have out rightly rejected. Films like Dulha Mil Gaya, Chance Pe Dance, Rann, Teen Patti and Pyaar Impossible, which seemed highly promising have failed to impress the fans and evoke any kind of response at the box office.

Siddharth Roy, CEO of UTV Movies, when asked said, “Despite the much needed hype created around these movies, they failed because they were very low on content. Probably our own movie Chance Pe Dance suffered on this account only.”

Agreed Ravi Gupta, CEO, Mukta Arts as he says, “Films in 2010 have performed badly at the box office because of low content. Films made with budget as low as Rs 15 crore have not been able to recover their cost.”

Whereas for the first three and a half months of the year, films did not click due to poor content, analyst say that the IPL cricket tournament has added to the worries of film makers. Viewers have stopped going to theaters ever since the IPL began and even good films do not stand any chance in these circumstances.

Analyst further point out that with T20 cricket world cup and then the football world cup round the corner, the fate of most film releasing till Diwali this year isn’t going to be very bright.

Hopefully the Hindi film industry will come up with good films in days to come. Otherwise Bollywood, which is already incurring heavy losses, will remember 2010 as a bad year.
