Deepika Padukone says she found it very difficult to smoke in Karthik Calling Karthik.
In times when government is trying to discourage smoking by giving a statutory warning in all scenes where character are shown smoking, makers of Karthik Calling Karthik have shown scenes where the lead lady of the film Deepika Padukone is smoking.
While it may be embarrassing to see a lady smoke on the silver screen, it wasn’t easy for even Deepika to shoot such scenes because in real life she has never touched a cigarette before she started working for this film. But, since it was the demand of her character in the film, Deepika had to learn smoking.
Speaking about her smoking experience in Karthik Calling Karthik, Deepika says, “I had to learn to smoke for the film though I am not really proud to talk about it. But then it’s something I have to do for my occupation. Sometimes films make you push yourself and you have to learn certain things, which in real life you don’t want to.”
If smoking was difficult for Deepika, it wasn’t easy for the makers of the film either. Reports suggest that whereas it was the need of the script that Deepika’s character should smoke, the makers of the film didn’t know how to convey this to Deepika. But, now when the film nears its completion, the makers of Karthik Calling Karthik are proud of the fact that Deepika took on the challenge by not only agreeing to smoke when they eventually asked her to do so but also closely watching her friends smoking so that she can portray her character to perfection.
But, if you look at it technically, despite smoking for her character in the film, Deepika did harm herself or spoil her habits in Karthik Calling Karthik. If sources close to the film are to be believed, since Deepika wasn’t comfortable smoking the normal cigarettes, she was provided with organic cigarettes to make her feel easy.

So, while it was very difficult for her to smoke in Karthik Calling Karthik, with the help from her friends and the unit of the team, Deepika managed to portray her character to perfection.
