Paathshaala director Milind Ukey does not like David Dhawan’s work.
David Dhawan may be one of the most successful director of Bollywood, who has given one hit after another in recent times but Milind Ukey whose film Paathshaala has hit the theatres this week has said that he does not consider David Dhawan and the likes of him as good directors.
When Milind Ukey was asked about his choice of directors recently, he said, “I have always been inspired by great Indian filmmakers like Satyajit Ray and even film makers from other countries like Ritwick Ghatak and Woody Allen. I’d rather make the Raju Hirani kind of comedies with meaning than the mindless films which David Dhawan is known to make.”
Milind Ukey said that he does not find that David deserves the tag of wholesome entertainer that is often given to him. The director added that rather than David, he likes the kind of formula films, which Manmohan Desai made.
The fact that rather than a David Dhawan or a Manmohan Desai film, he would prefer to make a Raju Hirani kind of a film is also evident from the fact that with Paathshaala, Milind Ukey has come up with a movie, which along with entertainment also gives a message to its viewers.
Surely, with the success of some meaningful films in the past, the viewers of Bollywood movies have also indicated that that they enjoy such films. But, what Milind Ukey needs to understand is that only meaningful films are not enough and cinema also needs to have an element of entertainment for it to be successful.
So, whereas director Milind Ukey does not like David Dhawan kind of cinema, what he needs to understand is that David’s films carry an element of entertainment, which is necessary for the commercial success. Unfortunately, that is where his film Paathshaala fails.
