Tabu
As entry into the Bollywood is getting more easier and new faces are hitting the silver screen every now and then, not many stars get an opportunity to play the young college boy for too long. Imagine, even at the peak of his career, Shahrukh Khan had to play a character, ageing in 40 in Mohabbatein. Yet, whenever these stars, whether male or female, who are either in their late 30’s or early 40’s, get a chance in their reel life to play a character half their age and sing dance and romance around trees, they never seem to miss it. This is even more true about our lead actresses, who would do anything to hide their true age and pretend to be college girls, even when their own children are ready to go to college.
But, surprisingly, one lead actress in Bollywood, who is doing just the opposite, is Tabu. Recently, when producers of her film The Legend of Kunal asked her to do some scenes in their film, where she was to be seen as a young girl in her early 20’s, Tabu refused.
The Legend of Kunal is actually a period film where Tabu, who stars against Amitabh Bachchan plays the character of Emperor Ashoka’s wife Tishyarakshitra. The script demanded certain scenes, where both Emperor Ashoka and his wife were to be seen as a young couple. The director of the film Chandraprakash Dwivedi points out, “I knew that I will face some problem filming these scenes, which were a part of the flashback, with Amitabh Bachchan, since it would be difficult to make him look younger. Therefore we had arranged special make-up artists for him. But I thought the process would have been much easier with Tabu, who still looks pretty young at the age of 38.”
But, as Chandraprakash Dwivedi approached Tabu, he was shocked when she refused saying, “Take a younger artiste to play my character’s young portion.” Everybody is still guessing that when at a very young age, she could play a character of a old woman in Astitva, why she refused to do the opposite now?
Well, despite much persuasion, when Tabu did not agree, the makers of the film had to finally drop the idea of even Amitabh Bachchan’s make over, and are now searching for two new artists to play the flashback part.
