Awards nights are always special. They are special not only for the stars, who gather at such nights, hoping to get an award that recognizes their inner talent and the hard work that they put into their roles, but also for the media, which come there looking for some spicy news to increase their readership or the TRP of their channels.
As the entire Bollywood gathered on the glittering evening to give away the prestigious Filmfare awards for the year 2008, the story wasn’t any different this time around. Whereas the Bollywood stars settled down to know what was happening ‘on stage’, the media also took keen notice of what was happening ‘off stage’. Apart from the usual, there was just this one incident that caught the eye and came to the notice of everyone, including the media.
As the stars came in and settled down with the Bachchans except Jaya and Shahrukh with his wife getting a seat in the front row, they exchanged the usual greetings among each other. Everyone present at the function eagerly wanted to meet and inquire about Shahrukh’s health, who was making his first public appearance after undergoing his shoulder surgery.
And one of them was Rekha, one of the biggest Bollywood heroines of 1970’s and 80’s. As Rekha went to meet Shahrukh, she naturally also saw the Bachchans and made it a point to greet them also. She first met and hugged Abhishek Bachchan and then his wife Aishwarya.
And now came the moment everyone was eagerly waiting for. Rekha was to meet Amitabh Bachchan. As you all know, Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan were infamous for both their on-screen and off-screen chemistry, which not only became a regular gossip news but allegedly rocked Amitabh-Jaya marriage.
So, as the cameras got ready to catch and click Mr. Bachchan and Rekha in the same frame, they were in for a big disappointment since before Rekha could finish her conversation with Aishwarya, just at the last moment, Mr. Big B decided to get up from his seat and walk off. Though, like a good actor, he tried to pretend that it was unintentional, everyone could make their own guess.
It seems though years have passed by, the rumors of Amitji-Rekha affair and its after effects are still fresh in Bachchan’s memory. Mr. Bachchan does not want to spark off a controversy at a time when his professional, social and personal life is going great. Or, did he not want to spoil his image in the eyes of his Bahu. Anyway, whatever may be the case, Big B thought precaution is better than cure and did precisely that.
