Amitabh Bachchan
Even though art and culture is beyond any boundary and understands no limit, but still there are some Bollywood stars, who respect their country and fellow Indians and feel hurt when their fellow citizens are targeted in any way.
One of those stars is Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Disturbed by the recent attack on Indian student in Australia, Mr. Bachchan has rejected an honorary doctorate offered to him by a Brisbane university.
Though, when he was initially contacted by the University, Mr. Bachchan had given his assent and accepted the honorary doctorate in the most humble manner but is said to have changed his mind now, after he heard about the incident where an Indian student was targeted in Australia and treated very harshly.
While disclosing this decision on his blog Mr. Bachchan wrote, ‘I have been observing the entire day on the electronic media, with great disappointment and shock the recent violent attacks on Indian students in Australia. I mean no disrespect to the Institution that honors me, but under the prevailing circumstances, where citizens of my own country are subjected to such acts of inhuman horror, my conscience does not permit me to accept this decoration from a country that perpetrates such indignity to my fellow countrymen.’
Mr. Bachans comments on his blog are very important in the sense that they show that there is at least one person in Bollywood who considers the safety, dignity and respect of fellow Indians over and above his personal interest.
Mr. Bachchan’s remarks are a lesson for the likes of Mahesh Bhatt, who even after the Mumbai attack, deep down their heart want cultural ties with Pakistan so that their movies can release in that country.
