Bipasha Basu in apaharan
Bollywood has always been associated with glamour and fashion. All stars, especially all the leading ladies of Bollywood have always tried to do each other not only in exposing but also in looking attractive and glamorous. In any case, in this male dominated industry, where the heroines are just used as a showpiece, people talk more about what they look like rather than what they do. You have the example of someone like Madhuri Dixit, who stole millions of hearts with Ek Do Teen, where everyone noticed her glamorous look and cared a damn about the overall splendid performance of this talented actress in Tezab..
Yes, there was a time when actresses like Meena Kumari, Nargis and Nutan were known for their acting skills and their performances spoke for themselves. Though, the general perception is that the era of performance oriented heroines has ended along with the likes of Meena Kumari, Nargis and Nutan, it is good to see that a few lead ladies have now taken the initiative to revive this glorious trend by taking up roles which will only showcase their acting and not the glamour, that is usually associated with them.
It all started with Bipasha Basu, who was seen in a unglamorous role with no make-up at all in Apaharan and still managed to get noticed. Now, with an eye on changing their image, many other leading ladies are about to take the silver screen without that killer look of theirs. Reports suggest that Katrina Kaif in Rajneeti, Priyanka Chopra in Kaminey and even to a large extent Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Ravana are going to be seen on the silver screen in a simple, straight and unglamorous look, with no make-up at all.
Whereas for you and me, it may be natural, but for stars, a day without make-up and that too while shooting is quite unexpected and unbelievable. As Priyanka puts it, “It felt like I was naked. One is so used to make-up.”
Its not only the glamorous stars themselves but alongside even those who present them in that glamorous look, who are also feeling tensed by this unprecedented experiment. As Dolly Ahluwalia, Priyanka’s stylist puts it, “Making these women look unglamorous is not easy, considering they are all known for their style quotient. We had to take all that away.”
So, as this unglamorous look gives these leading ladies to try something different, it is also a challenge for them to prove that it is their acting and not the looks that matter.
