Jai Ho Song from Slumdog Millionaire
With the general elections 2009 being announced, the political parties are out to woo the Indian voters in every way possible. Though, the cell phones, computer and internet, which are still comparatively new to our people, have become the inseparable part of our life and will be used extensively to woo the voters, it by no way means that the political parties are in any mood to give up the traditional ways of attracting the voters.
And one of the traditional ways is to campaign through film songs. The only difference though being, that instead of coping just the musical composition and adding their words to it, Congress, this time round, is going to use an original song for its campaign. Further, though composed by an Indian music composer, the irony is that the biggest national party of the country has chosen an international song to help in its campaign.
No points for guessing this right. The Congress has bought the rights of JAI HO from the movie Slumdog Millionaire from the owner of T-Series cassettes company, Bhushan Kumar, with a hope to ride on its wave in the upcoming elections.
Now, how far will this one song help Congress to get votes is something which only time will tell but the move has already created some controversies. Lyrist Gulzar, who wrote JAI HO while expressing his unhappiness over the move to politicize the song said, “If you ask me, don’t make it political, not at all. Is a great creation by Rahman so let it be,”
The Congress also plans to drag one of the star campaigner of BJP, the Gujrat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, to court for allegedly using this song at a public rally.
All this means your work cannot get you votes but a song can. JAI HO.
