Saturday, February 28 2009 saw the announcement of the most prestigious and eagerly awaited annual awards of the Hindi film industry, the 54th Filmfare awards, as the entire Bollywood gathered for the awards better known as the Indian Oscars.
The award function saw both the technical and popular awards being handed over to the stars and technicians for their excellent work in Bollywood in the year 2008.
And the Filmfare goes to….. First, talking about the technical awards, here are the persons and movies that took away the honors for outstanding film making last year.
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na won one technical award when the award for best choreography went to Longines as did Love Story 2050 when for the best visual effects, John Deitz took to the stage. Mumbai Meri Jaan won two when best editing was won by Amit Pawar and for screenplay writing, the trio of Yogendra, Vinayak Joshi and Upendra Sidaye were judged as the winners. Ghajini too got two of these when best action was taken away by Peter Hein and the all-prestigious R D Burman award was won by Banny Dayal. Oye Lucky Lucky Oye got lucky with three of them when the best costume design went to Monoshi Nath and Rushi Sharma and the best dialogue was bagged by Manu Rishi. Oye Lucky Lucky Oye also got the best production trophy. Similarly the much appreciated Rock On too bagged three technical awards for cinematography, sound design and story with Jason West, Vinod Subramaniyam and Abhishek Kapoor respectively being the winner.
Then came the critics awards where the best actor was won by Manjyot Singh for Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and the best actress was Shahana Ghosh for Rock On. The best film in this category was Mumbai Meri Jaan, which also received a special jury award. The jury was also all-praise for Prateik Babbar and Purab Kohli for their outstanding performances in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Rock on respectively.
The third in the list were the music awards that as expected saw A R Rehman winning the trophy for both the best music score of the year in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and best background score for Jodha Akhar, the film which also got Javed Akthar the best lyrics for Jashan E Baharan. The best singer female was won by Shreya Ghosal for Teri Ore from Singh Is King and the best male playback was Sukhwinder Singh for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
The lifetime achievement award went to Om Puri.
Among the much-awaited awards in popular category presented in the end, Asin won the female debutant for Ghajini, whereas Imran Khan’s performance in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and Farhan Akthar in Rock On shared this award in the male catory. Kangana Ranaut for Fashion and Arjun Rampal were judged as the best supporting actress and actor.
What are considered as three of the four most prestigious awards at the Filmfare went to Jodha Akbar when Ashutosh Gowariker bagged the award for best director and also took to stage along with Ronnie Screwvala to bag the trophy for the best film while Hrithik Roshan was judged as best actor. The only exception being the popular award for best actress, which went to Priyanka Chopra for her role in Fashion.
One of the most important evenings of the year of Hindi film industry, which brings together the entire Bollywood, was hosted jointly by Imran Khan and Ranbir and saw performances by Ahishek Bachchan, Shahid Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Katrina Kaif and Farhan Akhtar among others.
