Karan Johar may be a big name back home in India and Bollywood but outside the boundaries of India, he is just an ordinary guy. This was proved when a lawsuit was filed against him in Philadelphia for failing to fulfill the commitment to pay hundreds of junior artists, who worked for his company, Dharma Productions during last autumn.
Karan Johar has also been charged with allegations of trying to cheat with these artists by giving false information to the authorities. It is alleged that Karan Johar tried to continue with the shoot by changing his company’s name from Dharma Production to Karma production, but got caught on the wrong foot and couldn’t fool everyone for long.
Reports suggest that the alleged attempts by Karan Johar to avoid paying these artists by changing the name of his company could have serious consequences for him if the charges laid against him are proved in the court.
Those who are aware of the laws of Philadelphia say that if the charges against Karan Johar are proved, it way have serious effect on the entire film, which in this case being Jihaad, staring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. These legal experts say that if the charges of non-payment are proved against Johar, he may be liable to pay around $150,000.
But, what is worse for Karan Johar is that according to the laws of Philadelphia, the part of the film, which has been shot in that state, are a property and assets of the state and if the dues of the artists are not cleared, the state can withhold the part shot in the state.
This is a very difficult situation for Karan. Though, he is said to be very particular about his locations, the situation arising out of non-payment may force him to re-shoot the part of the film, which he shot in Philadelphia. That of course means further loss for the director. So, this is a catch 22 situation for Karan, and he doesn’t know how to deal with it.
