With the general elections 2009 being announced last week, its time for all political parties to select their candidates and then those candidates will go and file their nomination papers and start canvassing. This is the usual tread, the means our leaders adopt to win an election.

But unfortunately, that doesn’t hold true for Sanjay Dutt, the most preferred candidate of Samajwadi Party from Lakhnow Lok Sabha seat, who, being a TADA convict needs prior permission from the court to contest.

Sanjay has now moved the Supreme Court, asking it to suspend his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts so that he can contest the upcoming polls. Sanju is charged with unauthorized possession of arms that too those arms, which he allegedly got from a ‘friend’, who was involved in the Mumbai blasts. Sanjay has throughout maintained that whatever he did was a friendly gesture and he at that point of time had no idea that his so called friend or the weapon given to Sanju by him had anything to do with the Mumbai serial blasts.

In his petition, Sanjay’s lawyers have given the example of Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was allowed to contest the Lok Sabha polls despite being convicted by Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Well Mr. Dutt, isn’t it a big surprise that you are trying to draw parallel with Sidhu’s case? Unlike Sidhu, who was charged with a road rage case leading to the death of one person, you are charged with being a part of a conspiracy that was a pre-planned, intentional and anti-national act that led to the death of hundred of innocent men and women in Mumbai.

Sanju, this is just the beginning. Your past is not only going to haunt you but will prove as a strong weapon in the hands of your detractors if you actually do contest.
