Shahrukh Khan
Mr. Amitabh Bachchan had once said, “No matter how it faired at the box office, Swades was a different kind of a film.”
There may be many, who after being sick of all those usual masala movies in Bollywood, would tend to agree with Amitabh Bachchan. But if there is one person who disagrees with Mr. Bachchan here, surprisingly its none other than the lead star of Swades himself, Shahrukh Khan.
This apparently became evident when the director of Swades, Ashutosh Gowarikar, offered his next directorial venture to Sahrukh Khan but the Bollywood star refused the offer saying that since Swades did not work well at the Box Office, he would not want to do another film with the director. Reports suggest that
Ashutosh had even offered to co-produce the film with Shahrukh and was ready to work on his terms but still the latter did not show much interest in the proposed project.
Of course this is not the first time that Shahrukh has refused Ashutosh Gowarika. You may recall that Lagaan was first offered to Shahrukh Khan but on that occasion also, he refused the film out-rightly. But when the same script was offered to Aamir Khan, he not only acted in the film but even produced the film. You may also recall that Aamir had decided to produce Lagaan because he felt that to do complete justice with the storyline, this was necessary. Wondering if Shahrukh had similar doubts, Ashutosh put forward the idea of co-producing the film with Shahrukh, but it seems that the idea hasn’t impressed the King Khan.
Surely, one wonders if there is something more to it than the failure of Swades. Shahrukh, who is said to be very close to his friends won’t say No to them just because one movie failed. After all, if Ashutosh has given a flop like Swades, he has also given his like Lagaan and Jodha Akbar. Moreover, isn’t Shahrukh working with Karan Johar in My Name Is Khan even though Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna didn’t really set any Box office records?
