Ekk Deewana Tha is a remake of a film, which has earlier had Tamil and Telgu versions. After Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, successfully spread love in the air last week on the occasion of Valentine’s day, this one made by Gautham Menon is another romantic film on the offer.

No doubt Gautham Menon is one of the better directors down South and the Tamil and Telgu versions of this film were enough to prove the point, but here, we are talking about Ekk Deewana Tha, the Hindi version of the film, which unfortunately does not leave the same impact. The director has not only taken a story idea seen before in Bollywood but stretched it to the extent, which seems unbearable for the viewers. Apart from the fact that the second hour of the film is too long, the climax of the film is also very long, which makes the film boring.

Ekk Deewana Tha is about Sachin [Prateik], who belongs to a middle class family and apart from being an engineer also loves cinema. He meets Jessie [Amy Jackson], finds her beautiful and falls in love with her. But watching movies or love is not allowed in Jessie’s orthodox Malayali Christian family.

Whereas Jessie treats him just like a friend, Sachin draws close to her. Ultimately both realize they are in love and together face the opposition of Jessie’s family.

When you choose a story, which has been told earlier, you need to give it such twists and turns, which create the interest of the people in it. But, the story of Ekk Deewana Tha fails on two accounts in this regard. To begin with, it does not offer anything, which is drastically new and different, but even what is shown on the screen is so irrational that no one can absorb it. The story and screenplay of the film is extremely weak and play an important part in making the film not work.

Where the screenplay of Ekk Deewana Tha fails miserably is the character of Jessie. She looks terribly confused whether to love Sachin or not and the viewers are not able to understand why she cannot make-up her mind. And once she falls in love, the reason for her break-up with her boyfriend is also very unconvincing. The screenplay does not give a valid reason for a break-up, which the viewer can relate to and sympathize in the film.

As mentioned above Gautham Menon is a good director and some scenes in the film prove that as well but a poor story and screenplay does not allow him to showcase his talent. The director also needed to work on the length of the film, which is very long. The camera work, music and dialogue in Ekk Deewana Tha are good.

Considering the fact that Prateik is a relatively new actor in Bollywood, this particular role was tough for him. But the effort he has put in shows that he is learning fast and has the ability to make it big in the long run. The same goes for Amy Jackson. This role was tough for her because the character of Jessie was not written properly. But despite this, Amy looks good on screen and draws the attention of the viewers. Manu Rishi excels and so does Sachin Khedekar. Babu Antony and Ramesh Sippy in his guest appearance look good on the screen. But, on the other hand, Ashwin Kakumanu and Samantha fail to leave an impact because their role in Ekk Deewana Tha is very small.

Ekk Deewana Tha does have a few good moments but on a whole, it fails to impress due to his bad story and screenplay.
