How long will our Bollywood producers continue to copy Hollywood films without having the technology that is used in the west and continue to fail? Acid Factory, the latest offering by producer Sanjay Gupta, who in the past few years has given us some thrilling movies like Shootout At Lokhandwala, Zinda and Musafir, happens to be another such film. And though, it is a copy of a Hollywood film, this movie lacks the intensity Gupta’s previous offerings.
Still, the director Supan Verma manage to give you a film that despite being a loose copy of Hollywood film, does manage to hold you to your seat, at least in the second part.
This is a story of a man (Fardeen Khan), who one day wakes up to find himself in a deserted factory and has been shot at. He does not know who he is because he has lost his memory and suffers from amnesia. But, soon he finds out that he is not the only one but is surrounded by others, (Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Manoj Bajpayee, Danny Denzongpa, Diya Mirza) all of whom have lost their memory and some have even been shot at. They also discover that they have lost their memory due to leakage of gas.
It is only later that they eventually find out that two of them have been kidnapped by other three. But, due to the loss of memory, they are confused, who are the kidnappers and who has been kidnapped? At the same time, the entire lot of people are also being searched by a police inspector (Irfan Khan) and a worried wife (Neha) of one of the five people.
The biggest drawback of the film is that it moves at a very slow pace and for a large part of the film, the viewers are left confused, who the characters are. Though, the director does able to get a grip on the film in the second half and as a consequence, you as a viewer start enjoying the film.
Needless to say, the key feature of the film is the powerful performance by Danny Denzongpa, Manoj Bajpayee and Irrfan Khan. Others like Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea and Diya Mirza have supported them well.
But, there are too many indirect drawbacks in the film that may adversely affect its chances at the Box office. First, its only targeted at the multiplex audiences of big cities and does not find too many takers in small towns. Alongside, lack of good music and proper publicity may also make things worse.
In short, with so many big films that are on the offer, the film’s chances at the box office are not very bright.
