Movie Review: Dulha Mil Gaya

Stars: Fardeen Khan, Sushmita Sen, Shahrukh Khan, Ishita Sharma

Dulha Mil gaya looks like a mixture of or a little bit of many films put together. It is a little bit of My Fair Lady, a little bit of Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye, a little bit of Naseeb Apna Apna, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. If that wasn’t enough, it also resembles other Bollywood films like Man Pasand and Hum Tere Aashiq Hain. So, you can probably say without any hesitation that Dulha Mil Gaya is old wine in a new bottle but then isn’t that what most of our Bollywood movies are? Yet, despite being an old story, a film has a chance of doing well at the Box office if the story is narrated in an interesting manner and somehow manages to bind the audiences but unfortunately, Dulha Mil Gaya fails at that point as well.

It seems the writer-director of the film Mudassar Aziz, feels that borrowing attractive ideas from past hits, filming them at beautiful locations and having some successful stars are enough to make a movie a hit at the box office. Unfortunately, he has been proved wrong.

The story of the film revolves mainly round four characters of entirely conflicting interest and nature. They include Donsai [Fardeen Khan], a well groomed man, who is scared of marriage, commitment and long term relationships, Samarpreet [Ishitta Sharma], a typical Punjabi girl, who feels that the relationships are to be cherished and treasured, Shimmer [Sushmita Sen],  a glamorous and successful women, for whom independence and success are more important than any kind of love and relationships and Pawan Raj Gandhi (Shahrukh Khan), who despite being a multi-millionaire feels  that winning in love is the biggest victory in life.

As the four persons get close, they teach others about their understanding and philosophy about love and life also learn a thing or two from each-other.

Though, the story and the film looks to be influenced by many other films you might have seen earlier, it does have some interesting moments but they are few and far between. You hope that the film will gear-up once the Shahrukh’s character is introduced but are disappointed when even Shahrukh cannot lift up the film to the level where it can hold the interest of the audiences.

The story of the film is very weak. One fails to understand why the parents of a girl traveling from Punjab to Trinidad and Tobago don’t inquire about her whereabouts and why doesn’t she herself call them up to inform them about it? Similarly, you fail to figure out why the same Sushmita tries to be tame in front of Fardeen and gives a cold shoulder to Shahrukh? These flaws indicate the weak script and screenplay by Mudassar Aziz, which fails to have any impact on the viewer.

But, when it comes to direction, Mudassar Aziz looks promising and has done a reasonable job, at least better than a writer. Still, he could have done a better job had he got a more refreshing and attractive script in his hand.

The Cinematography and the music of the film are good but nothing special to mention about.

The film belongs to Sushmita Sen, who has given an exceptionally good performance in her character. Fardeen Khan has also done a good job and impresses you in some parts of the film. Ishita has also given a decent performance.

But, probably the biggest drawback of the film is that despite it being promoted as a Shahrukh film, his role is too small for his fans to get enough of him and be satisfied in any way. The roles of other major actors in the film including Mohit Chadha, Johny Lever, Tara Sharma, Suchitra Pillai, Parikshit Sahni, Bina Kak and Viveck Vaswani are also too small to be mentioned.
