Saif-Kareena1

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Kurbaan

Movie: Kurbaan
Director: Rensil D’Silva

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Kirron Kher, Om Puri

Ever since the attack on the twin World Trade Centre buildings in New York took place; there has been an atmosphere of mistrust, suspicion and uneasiness. Though, many stories have been told in the past about the terrorists and their wicked plans, not many have been as powerful as Kurbaan. Dharma Productions has come up with a profound, thought-provoking and dramatic film, which manages to bind you throughout.

The film talks of the psyche of terrorists and those, who are a witness to the horrifying incidents, without taking anybody’s side in particular.

With Kurbaan, director Rensil D’Silva has made a rare film, which is thought provoking, educative as well as entertaining and appeals to your consciousness.

The film tells a story of Avantika [Kareena Kapoor] I, who has come back from New York, to be a teacher in University of Delhi after her father suffers a heart attack.

Avantika meets Ehsaan Khan [Saif Ali Khan], a fellow teacher in Delhi University and they fall in love.

Soon Avantika gets an offer to get back to New York. Ehsaan does not mind her going back to New York, but before she goes, he wants both of them to get married.

Once married, the two shift to New York to settle down in an Indian neighborhood. The next day, Avantika meets Salma [Nauheed Cyrusi], who after a couple of meetings tells Avantika that she is in a big danger and needs help. But, little does Avantika know that by helping Salma, she herself is getting into danger. What follows is a series of events, where Avantika has to face many problems.

The film has two stories running simultaneously. One, the love story between Saif and Kareena and the other is the terrorist angle of the film.

The film catches your attention from the beginning itself, with director Rensil D’Silva unfolding one incident after another, which keeps you hooked to the film. Despite the story being somewhat similar to that of New York, director Rensil D’Silva has managed to show something new and interesting. At no point in the film do you feel that you are watching another New York. The debutant director needs to be applauded for his work in Kurbaan.

Of course, the film drags a bit in the second hour. Surprisingly, despite the fact that it has a 30 minutes long climax, which is quite rare in Bollywood, you do not get bored watching it.

On the technical side, the cinematography by Hemant Chaturvedi is good, which gives the film an international look. The same can be said about the action sequences of the film, which have been shot well.

Both the music and lyrics of the film go well with the story.

The star-cast of the film, which not only includes Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi, but also Om Puri and Kiron Kher have all done a wonderful job. But, what may be interesting though is that the chemistry between Kareena and Vivek looks far more captivating than that of Kareena and Saif.

Other actors in the film like Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, have all done justice to their respective characters.

So, given that you have time, watching Kurbaan may not be a bad idea.
