Just as it was said about some other films released in recent weeks, making a film on a realistic issue like Kashmir, which is the theme of Lamhaa, is a very difficult task. We read and see so much on this issue that we know almost everything about it. Therefore, the director needed to come up with something different to catch the attention of the viewers.
Lamhaa starts with a few real life incidence that occur regularly in Kashmir, which for a moment makes you believe that this is going to be a very interesting film to watch. But as the film unfolds, you find that Lamhaa is nothing but a very usual and ordinary bollywood film.
Given that the director Rahul Dholakia has done extensive study on Kashmir before making it, there a few very interesting moments in the film that make you sit on the edge of the seat. Bit Lamhaa fails to show what actually the root cause of Kashmir problem is. It also does not show anything new, which we have not seen before. Moreover, it does not highlight the real problems being faced by Kashmir.
The film is a story of Vikram (Sanjay Dutt), who is sent on a secret mission to Kashmir after the military and intelligence agencies receive a news of possible disruption in the valley. The very day he reaches Kashmir, one of the biggest separatist leaders of Kashmir Haji (Anupam Kher) survives a blast.
Vikram suspects that the blast and his visit to the state have some link. To solve the puzzle, he seeks the help of Aziza (Bipasha Basu). Their strong faith and a will to survive despite all problems, creates a strong bond between the two and they try to find the truth behind the Kashmir issue.
One point that Lamhaa highlights is that despite being hit by terrorism for almost 2 decades, Kashmir is still one of the most beautiful place on this planet. Cameraman James Fowlds has captured some wonderful scenes of the valley. But Lamhaa just gets to the tip of the problem which has gripped this beautiful place and also does not provide any solution.
The main drawback of the film is in its writing. The story and the screenplay of the film by Raghav Dhar and Rahul Dholakia are very weak. For example, the story tries to make you believe throughout that the terrorists have a very big plan to execute. But in the end, it proves to be a very timid sort of a plan, leaving the viewer disappointed. In fact, the story and screenplay are so weak that rather than a single film, Lamhaa looks like a group of incidents and scenes put together. Another flaw in the film is that the director, who starts with a realistic story, loses that realistic track in the middle. Had the director struck with showing what’s happening in Kashmir, this would have been a very good film to watch. But, after some good scenes, Lamha does not have much to offer. Even the climax of the film is very weak and the way Sanjay unfolds the terror plan does not look convincing at all.
The direction by Rahul Dholakia is also weak. He needs to understand that by showing selfish politicians, children being trained as terrorists and bodies being filled with bomb, he won’t make a good film. We all read and see about all this on a daily basis. You need to show something new and different in a film dealing with a realistic issue to attract the viewers. Dialogues of the film are weak and artificial. The music of the film by Mithoon is good but even then the songs are at the wrong place and make the film slow.
If all those flaws were not enough, here is the biggest of them all. All the three main characters of the film Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor just don’t fit into their respective characters. Mahesh Manjrekar is also disappointing. The only good performance comes from Anupam Kher, who stands out in his role.
Lamhaa was a big film with Sanjay Dutt, and Bipasha Basu in the lead. People also had huge expectations from director Rahul Dholakia. But despite all the hype around it, Lamhaa is a total disappointment.
