Cast: Bipasha Basu, Maradona Rebello, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ronit Roy and Lilette Dubey
Director: Sudipto Chattopadhyaya
This is the age of experimental cinema but unfortunately a lot of things that are being shown these days in the name of experiment are not worth watching at all and make no sense. Film makers are wasting both time and resources to make movies, which are so difficult for anyone to understand and the viewer just cannot figure out what the maker is trying to say. Pankh is one such movie.
Though the basic idea of the film, where a male child features as a girl in movies is good, the screenplay and direction by Sudipto Chattopadhyay, is beyond what one can understand and make the film very ordinary.
Pankh is so weird that when you come out after seeing the film, you tend to feel that wasting three hours on this movie is just not worth it.
Pankh tells the story of Kusum, who is actually a boy but while working in films as a child artist he often undertakes the characters of a girl child. The child, who is born as Jerry, has to change his name to Jai to try his luck in the films and ultimately is accepted as Kusum because most of the roles he gets are of girl child. The film also shows the disturbing relation between the child and his mother.
The main character of the film is obsessed with the stunning looks of the actress. Now, when the actress is so good looking that everyone gets impressed by her, how does the confusion about her sexual identity makes any difference and why does the director make an issue about it? The film showing Bipasha in so many avtars is also very confusing.
The direction by Sudipto Chattopadhyay is very weak.
The film also has very little to offer in terms of performances. The performances by Maradona Rebello, Bipasha Basu, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ronit Roy and Amit Purohit are quite ordinary. Other actors like Lilette Dubey, Daya Shanker Pandey, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Asha Sachdev have done justice to their roles and look good in their respective characters.
Pankh is a poor attempt by its makers and may not have much scope at the box office.
