Producer – Prakash Jha
Director – Prakash Jha
Star Cast – Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Manoj Bajpai, Arjun Rampal, Nasseruddin Shah
Raajneeti, the new offering by Prakash Jha is a film, which while keeping the famous Hindu mythological epic Mahabharata in the backdrop, talks of a story of a family in the Hindi heartland, where cousin brothers are at war and the vicious games they play to rule the dynastic and electoral politics. Raajneeti, whose story is a mixture of both the Mahabharata and to a certain extent the famous Hollywood film Godfather goes to show that had the characters of Mahabharata had been alive today and had they been a part of active present day politics, what dirty games would they have played to beat their rivals and stay in power.
The film talks of greed of people indulging in active politics and how far can they go to get their own way with the help of the power they attain through the political system in this country.
Raajneeti is a story of Bhaskar Sanyal (Nasseruddin Shah), a great and energetic leader whom no one can ever challenge in his area. But then, due to a mistake, which he has committed, Bhaskar has to leave politics and go into a self impose retirement.
As the time passes, a new generation of power hungry politicians comes into picture, who want to reach the top at any cost and within no time. One such politician is Prithvi (Arjun Rampal), who wants to remain in power come what may and the other is his cousin brother Veerendra (Manoj Bajpayee), who wants to pull Prithvi down and feels that he himself is born to rule. And to gain some political advantage, Veerendra uses an angry young man Sooraj (Ajay Devgn). Suraj is keen to be a leader but while he sides with Veerendra, he is unaware of his own real identity and the dirty plans Veerendra has in his mind.
The story also has three other characters. First being Prithvi’s brother Samar (Ranbir Kapoor), who despite not wanting to do so gets caught and has to become part of this family rivalry and the second is Indu (Katrina Kaif) daughter of a rich industrialists, who too gets into this mess by mistake and soon masters it. Last but not the least is Brij Gopal (Nana Patekar), who not only guides Prithvi and Samar but also tries to sort out their differences with Veerendra.
It is not easy for anyone to make a film, which has so many big stars and yet each one of them fits in so superbly in it and seems like an inseparable part of the story. Prakash Jha needs to be complemented for using each character in such an appropriate manner that he or she does not look forced in any way. Moreover, Raajneeti is different from most Bollywood films because of the element of surprise it contains. You cannot guess what is going to happen next and you wait for it.
Raajneeti also highlights the dark side of Indian politics in a beautiful manner. The director does need a good understanding of politics to make such a film and Prakash Jha has shown with this film that he has that understanding and knowledge. The director has managed to show the ugly face of our political system and the unethical and unlawful means our politicians adopt to get to the position of power.
The weak point of the film though, is that it takes a while for you to get hooked to the film but once the story start moving, it totally holds you and you get deeply involved in it. Another disadvantage is that there hour film is too long for you to sit through these days.
The excellent story, screenplay and direction of the film are the strong points of Raajneeti and Prakash Jha deserves a standing ovation for the same. The good story and screenplay have been support by equally good dialogues and cinematography, which have given the much needed support to the story. The film did not have much scope for music and apart from Mora Piya, there is no other track in the film that can be remembered.
As far as performances are concerned, Ranbir Kapoor in the first serious role of his life has managed to leave an impact. Apart from Ranbir, Manoj Bajpai and Arjun Rampal have also left an impact with this film and Raajneeti can be termed as a comeback venture for both of them. Nana Patekar and Katrina Kaif have done justice to their character. Though Nasseruddin Shah and Ajay devgn also look good in the film, their fans will be disappointed by the length of their role, which is rather small. The lengthy main star cast of Raajneeti has been supported well by other artists like Dayashanker Pandey, Chetan Pandit, Darshan Jariwala, Shruti Seth, Kiran Karmarkar, Vinay Apte and Nikhila Trikha,
Rajneeti is a great effort by Prakash Jha, which leaves its impact. Go and watch it;
