Movie Review: Toh Baat Pakki

by admin on February 22, 2010

Star Cast: Tabu, Sharman Joshi, Uvika Chaudhary, Vatsal Sheth, Ayub Khan, Sharat Saxena, Himani Shivpuri, Suhasini Mulay, Upasna Singh

Kedar Shinde, the maker of Toh Baat Pakki seems to be one of those many directors in Bollywood, who are influenced by the simple and straight forward method of film making and story telling, which was followed by greats like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. But, although the director has tried his best to make a film filled with humor and entertainment, he has failed to show anything new or refreshing.

Toh Baat Pakki narrates the story of Rajeshwari [Tabu], married to Vinay [Ayub Khan). Rajeshwari wants to marry her sister Nisha [Yuvika Choudry) to an eligible bachelor in the Saxsena community. Soon she finds Rahul [Sharman Joshi], an engineering student, whom Rajeshwari thinks is fit for her sister and even finds a reasonable accommodation for him.

But her plans to get her sister married to this boy get a serious set-back when Rajeshwari learns that Rahul is not interested in getting married to her sister. But, Rajeshwari does not loose heart and makes a deliberate attempt to bring her sister close to Rahul.

Rajeshwari does succeed in her attempts. But just when Rajeshwari manages to settle everything for Rahul and her sister, she finds herself in a difficult situation with a new guest Yuvraaj [Vatsal Sheth] in her house, who is much better match for her sister. Now, suddenly, changing the whole scene, Rajeshwari tries to bring her sister close to Yuvraaj.

The film seem interesting but it is not since a good film is that whose story looks equally interesting when it is narrated and finally when you look at it on the big screen. This is where Toh Baat Pakki fails miserably. Whereas the story looks good when being narrated, it loses its grip during the course of time being filed.

So, needless to say, the main problem with the film is its screenplay, which at certain portions of the film is very weak. Certain parts of the films, like for example, Sharman helping Tabu in marriage celebrations or Sharman trying to poison Himani Shivpuri and Vatsal Sheth or the entire abduction drama in the end look very weak when it comes to screenplay.

Kedar Shinde’s direction is impressive in certain portions of the film. Yet you tend to feel that had he got a better script with a tighter screenplay, he could have given a much better film. Even the work of some other people behind the camera like Pritam’s music and the Dialogue writer’s Dialogues are not all that convincing.

Toh Baat Pakki will be remembered as a comeback film for Tabu, who is going to be seen on screen after a long gap. May be its her long absence, which makes her look even more attractive on the screen. Add to it her flawless performance, which makes her even a bigger treat to watch. She has been supported well by Sharman Joshi and Vatsal.  The other star-cast of the film including Ayub Khan. Himani Shivpuri, Suhasini Mulay and Upasna Singh have not been given much chance in the film.

On a whole,  Toh Baat Pakki is a good attempt, which is able to hold you in parts. But, those parts are not enough to make the film an overall hit..
