Rocket-Singh

Ranbir Kapoor with Shazahn Padamsee in Rocket Singh

Director: Shimit Amin

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Shazahn Padamsee, prem Chopra, Gauhar Khan, Naveen Kaushik, manish Choudhary

This is a simple story of a simple man, his struggle and accomplishments. But at the end of the day, this is not a kind of a story, which you want to be your own because it doesn’t leave you happy.

The film, which at places seems like a documentary on the life of a salesman, is neither powerful enough nor draws your attention for a period of three hours. Thus, with hardly any romance, comedy or good song to talk of, it is not a wholesome entertainer; you would have expected it to be.

This rather unexciting film talks about Harpreet Singh Bedi [Ranbir Kapoor], who has just graduated with not very good marks. But since he wants to make it big in life despite not getting good marks, he gets into the world of salesmanship. Though even here, his plans of making it big fall apart due to the professional compulsions and pressure by his bosses.

Though, it is unbelievable, but it is true that the director has taken almost two hours to establish the story, which has made the film very slow. The rather long period taken by the director to explain the life of a salesman comes out as a major drawback of the film. The story only picks momentum at the latter stages of the second hour with the lead actor’s college life getting a bit complex but until that point apart from a few scenes in-between, the story just moves on without giving you too many opportunities to be at the edge of the seat.

Thus, you can say that it is the overall storyline of the film by Jaideep Sahni , which is very weak. Moreover, apart from some scenes like the one where Ranbir talks to his boss over the phone, which has been written and filmed exceptionally well, the overall screenplay of the film is also poor. The film fails to give you that good feeling, which is necessary for a Bollywood film to do well.

Among the people working behind the camera, it is the back ground music of Salim-Sulaiman and Vikash Nowlakha’s cinematography, which deserve special mention. But unfortunately, despite trying very hard Shimit Amin fails to impress as a director.

But, it won’t be wrong to say that 2009 belongs to Rabir Kapoor. After Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, this is the third film in a row where Ranbir has proved himself as an actor. The film’s lead female actress Gauhar Khan  also looks good in her role. The two have been supported well by Prem Chopra and a few other artists like the one who plays the role of Ranbir’s boss Puri and colleague Nitin,

But Rocket Singh, Salesman Of The Year is a perfect example of the fact that good acting isn’t the only requirement of a successful film. Good performances must be accompanied by a good story, a good screenplay and a good direction as well. But, since Rocket Singh, Salesman Of The Year has none of these, it is most likely to not go well with the audiences.
